Today I paid all attention to the career experiences of Kim Ng before she becoming the highest-ranking female and Asian-American in MLB. The career resume of Kim Ng was as follows:
- White Sox Front Office (1990-96)
- American League Office (1996-97)
- Yankees Assistant GM (1998-01)
- Dodgers VP & Assistant GM (2002-11)
- Senior Vice President of Baseball OPS for MLB (2011-20)
- Miami Marlins GM (Nov 13, 2020-present)
Her first job interview for GM came in Los Angeles in 2005 and, during the next decade, interviewed in Seattle, Anaheim, San Diego (twice), Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New York. A lot of those jobs went to assistant GMs who were younger and had less experience. More interestingly, in 2002, when Preller had just started his professional baseball career with the Dodgers and was still serving as a small commissioner in the baseball affairs department, Ng was already the team’s assistant general manager and his immediate boss.
In 2005, the Dodgers selected Ned Colletti, assistant general manager of the San Francisco Giants. In 2008, the Mariners selected the general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers Jack Zduriencik. In 2011, the Angels chose Jerry Dipoto, the former acting general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2014, the Padres selected A. J. Preller, assistant general manager of the Texas Rangers. In 2018, Ng applied for the general manager positions of the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets. The Giants chose the former Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi, and the Mets chose the former agent Brodie Van Wagenen.
A lot of those owners lived to regret their choices. Jack Zduriencik was GM in Seattle for seven years and never made the playoffs. Jerry DiPoto was the GM in Anaheim for four seasons and never won a postseason game. A.J. Preller has been the GM in San Diego since 2015 and just made his first postseason last month. Matt Klentak was hired in Philadelphia instead of Ng and went five seasons without a winning record before stepping down.
