As planned, there would be two basketball games between Tiffin and Malone, respectively from men’s and women’s. Affected by the negative influence of COVID-19, the men’s game canceled. Although today was the last game before the coming Christmas and New Year Holidays, the women’s basketball game was full of passion and showed the outstanding team spirit to take the ultimate victory. It took five extra minutes, but Tiffin women’s basketball was able to complete their comeback and defeat Malone 69-67 in overtime on Saturday. This game was the second one between Tiffin and Malone, the Dragons sweep the season series with the Pioneers after defeating them on the road, 69-61, on Dec. 9. The Dragons were able to overcome a large disparity in points off turnovers, as Malone scored 25 compared to just five for Tiffin. TU made up for it in other ways, though, outrebounding the Pioneers 41-34 and scoring ten more points in the paint. Tiffin and Malone were even at 16 after the first quarter, but the Pioneers pulled away in the second period to take a 33-26 lead at the break. The Dragons chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter, trailing by just four, 49-45, with 10 minutes to play in regulation. Malone extended the lead back out to seven to begin the fourth with a triple. The Dragons still trailed by six with 4:36 to go, but a 9-3 Dragon run that ended with a Richards layup evened the score at 62 with 1:37 remaining. Neither team was able to score in the final 90 seconds, sending the game to overtime. The Dragons struck first in extra time on a Tate bucket, but another three would put the Pioneers up 67-66 with 1:31 to play. With 29 seconds left and Tiffin still down by one, Nichols took the game into her hands and got a runner to fall in the lane with just 10 seconds remaining. Richards would add a free throw before all was said and done, and Malone’s last-second attempt from the left-wing clanged off the rim and into the hands of Richards, giving Tiffin the two-point win.
